Cleaning a Vintage Quilt TOP #cleaningtips

Cleaning a vintage quilt top, start to finish! The products I use in the water are sodium perborate, AKA Restoration or Retro Clean (link below), and a splash of household ammonia. This is a small amount of ammonia and you will never smell it. Rinses right out, but takes out odor, mold and mildew! Laurastar at the Longarm Machine #laurastar

This is my review of the Laurastar ironing system at the longarm. I used the Smart U in this video, which worked great. If I were only using this machine at my longarm, I would most likely use the LIFT. The iron was terrific steaming out wrinkles. It did a nice flat press on the seams as well! Make your own decorative zippers, using things you probably already have! Old zippers work well for this project! Add ribbon, lace, trims, anything flat that can be stitched along side the zipper track. I like to use glue to hold it down first, but use whatever you're comfortable with like pins or clips. I use tiny bottles that I've filled with Elmer's washable school glue. Find the bottle link...

Glue Baste Quilt Seams for Accuracy
Переглядів 1,5 тис.5 місяців тому
Use simple, washable, Elmer's school glue to keep seams from moving while you sew them. You can use either the white or clear glue, no matter! The beauty of Elmer's is that it will hold your fabric in place so you can sew, or wash out if you eventually wash the finished quilt. I use Elmer's glue in art quilts and everyday quilts. It is also non-toxic and acid free, so no reasons not to use it! ...

Scrappy FEEDSACK Quilt
Переглядів 6625 місяців тому
This is a quilt I'm adding to as I have scraps. I'm using the leftover feedsack scraps from the pincushion BACKS that I create. They are already quilted, but when it's as large as I want (hoping king size!), then I'll put a backing on the longarm, a thin batting, then ditch stitch every 2-3" on the top. It will be a heavy quilt! I square it as I go and create long strips out of all the 'blocks'...

Im 75, been sewing since i was 5, and you just gave me a gob of information i did not know. Truthfully, i must have had my head under a rock, not to know some of those things, but i find the older i get, the more i learn and the less i realize i " know". So thank you! I collect old quilt topa and ill never get them all hand quilted in my lifetime and im not rich enough to have someone else quilt them, so ill take your wise counsel and focus on gettind my favorites off the shelf and back to work! 😊❤❤❤❤❤❤❤

Buying so,instance and a steamer pronto! I’ve been longarm quilting for a couple,of years and from time to time e get aui;ts with a little fullness. Nothing too bad yet, but it’s just a matter of time. I have been misting with water but I think these extra steps will be so helpful.

If the first soak has done the job, then I just rinse in cold water. If there are still light stains, I’ll do a new mix of Retro Clean soak (don’t need the ammonia) and then repeat.
